5 String viola d' Amore. Viola d' Amore de 5 cuerdas.

 So, here it comes, a five string viola d'amore, with no simpathetic strings, and those five will be brass strings, like the ones on the harpsichord. Based on a Tielke instrument.

Viola d'Amore de cinco cuerdas (sin cuerdas simpáticas) basada en un modelo de Tielke.
Estará encordada con cuerdas de latón.

Pecha Kucha Night in Donostia. It was fun.

Takes a bit of work to prepare but it makes you think and I did learn some things. I knew its pretty difficult to be clear and precise in a few seconds, but I tend to forget it from time to time (as with so many things).
Pecha Kucha is some kind of something (not yet very clear what) but you have twenty images and just twenty second per image to explain what you want, and as I said, it can be tricky...
And what did I talk about? Guess? Early Instrument making, what else could it be. Sorry,the audio is in Basque, one of the languages of this funny country (funny not to use the other word starting with an f...). Ah, and part of the beggining is missing.


Pecha Kucha gaua Donostian. Ondo egon zan.
20 irudi erabiltzen dituzu 20 segundu irauten duenak bakoitza zerbait azaltzeko. Eta zeren gainean berba egin zuen Anderrek? Baaai, hori da. Ala, ikusi bideua.
(PowerPoint ei buruzko Luistxon irakaspenak buruan eduki genittuen lan hau prestatzean). Azkenean ezin izan neban gidoia irakurri mikroak hankarik ez zekalako ta heldu ein bihar zan aho onduan, dana dala be ez zeuan argi gehixegi ezer ikusteko...)

Aunque el nombre quizá pueda sonar euskérico o cercano al vascuence, es en realidad un invento japonés (con alguna lejana relación con el Kamishibai?¿). Tienes 20 imágenes que duran 20 segundos cada una. (Haced la prueba, escribid algo sobre una imagen q queraís explicar y luego leerlo en voz alta, cúantos segundos os da?). Ha sido un ejercicio muy interesante.
Y sobre qué habló Ander? Pues sí, sobre el surrealista mundo de la construcción de instrumentos antiguos.
Ah, eso sí, está en vascuence (y sin subtítulos).

Pochette, kit or dancing master`s violin.

The pochette, kit, dancing master's violin, or Tanzmeistergeige in German, is a very small violin (with different shapes), designed to be carried in a pocket.
It was used by dance masters in royal courts and other places of nobility, as well as by street musicians up until around the XVIIIth century.

Pochette, kit edo dantza maisuaren biolintxua, oso tamaña txikiko biolin bat da, poltsikoan sartuta eramateko modukoa (garaiko poltsiko haundi batean, noski).
Dantza maisuek dantza egiten erakusteko erabiltzen zuten, burgesia edo nobleziaren etxe partikularretan edo kortean. XVIII. menderarte kale musikariek ere sarri erabili izan zuten.

Pochette, kit o violín del maestro de danza es un violín de tamaño pequeño (de muy variadas formas), diseñado para poder ser llevado en el bolsillo.
Utilizado por los maestros de danza en la corte o en residencias particulares de la nobleza o la burguesía. Fue frecuentemente utilizado por los musicos callejeros hasta el siglo XVIII.



This model is inspired by the instruments by Tielke (or instruments sold in his shop, as they are almost identical to the ones by Regnault, a Parisian maker).
String length is about 300mms, and in spite of the small size of the instrument string spacing at nut and bridge are the same as a 'normal' size violin.

Modelu hau Tielke ren instrumentu batean oinarritua dago (edo berak saltzen zituen instrumentuetan, zihurrenik Parisko Regnaultek ginikoak).
Sokaren luzeera 300mm koa da eta nahiz eta instrumentua oso txikia izan soken arteko ditantziak bai zubian eta bai diapasoian tamainu 'normal'eko bibolin baten bezalakoak dira.

Este modelo está inspirado en los instrumentos de Tielke (o mejor dicho en los que vendía, probablemente de Regnault, constructor Parisino).
La longitud de cuerda vibrasnte es de 300 mms y aunque las dimensiones de la caja sean pequeñas, la distancia entre cuerdas tanto en el puente como en la cejilla son como los de un instrumento 'estandard'.

The instrument is inlaid with twisted silver thread.

7 string bass viol (another one)

Another 7 string bass. Two piece bent top and ivory imitation binding.
Head and pegbox are carved in a french style but body does not look french at all (a bit on the german side...) and then back is made out of stripes of maple and some kind of tropical wood (more on the french or early english style...) Daughter of many mothers.

Beste 7 sokako biola baxu bat. Berotan doblatutako bi piezako tapa eta boli faltsuzko kordoia.
Buru eta kabilatokia estilo frantziarrekoa baina gorputzak ez dut instrumentu frantsezen batere itxurarik (alemaniarrak gogorarazten dizkigu gehiago...) Baina atzekaldea tiratan egina dago eta honek frantziarrak edo hasierako ingelesak gogorarazten dizkigu berriz...Ama askore alaba azken fiñian...

Otro bajo de 7 cuerdas, Tapa doblada en dos piezas y cerco de imitación de márfil.
La cabeza y clavijero de un indudable estilo francés, pero al bajar la vista el estilo del cuerpo no es tal (recuerda más a los instrumentos alemanes...) El fondo en cambio, hecho en diferentes tiras de madera recuerda de nuevo a los instrumentos franceses (o los primeros inglese). Hija de muchas madres pues...

Mary Rose Fiddle

This is one of my interpretations of the rests of the instruments (fiddles) found in the Mary Rose.
As you know this is a warship that sunk on 1545 in the south of England. There they have found many objects, among them some musical instruments.


Just soundboards and back/ribs survive from the fiddles (along with a bow fragment). Bcak and ribs are carved from the same piece of wood, and would the neck too?? That´s something we do not know as they have not been found. That also means that we have no clue about the number of strings...


In this case we´ve decided to make a four string instrument with the neck integral with the rest of the body (back and ribs). Soundboard and back are flat as seem to be in the original (But it´s difficult to tell that about an object wich has been underwater for such a long time).

Fingerboard and bridge are curved so individual strings can be played, melody. Curve is not very big so its also confortable for double strings and drone playing. It is all strung in gut.



The bow is also based on the original. In this case just a piece around a foot long was found (from the nut side)
